Growing up with more than one language
Glen Waverley is one of Melbourne's most multilingual suburbs. A large proportion of the families we see from the area speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Tamil, Korean or another language at home, often alongside English.
Parents ask us the same question constantly: is my child behind because we speak two languages at home?
The short answer is no. Growing up bilingual does not cause language delay, and it does not make an existing delay worse. Bilingual children sometimes mix languages, may have a smaller vocabulary in each individual language while having a larger total vocabulary, and may pass some milestones on a slightly different timeline. None of that is a disorder.
What matters is whether your child is developing well across both languages combined. A genuine language difficulty shows up in every language a child speaks — not just in English.
We will never tell you to stop speaking your home language to your child. That advice was once common and it was wrong. Your home language is how your child connects to their family, their grandparents and their culture, and it is the language you are most fluent, most playful and most emotionally expressive in. That is precisely what language development needs.

Questions from Glen Waverley families
My child speaks well in Mandarin but not in English. Is that a delay?
Not necessarily — that's a normal pattern for a child with more English exposure at kinder than at home. We assess across both languages before drawing conclusions, and we'll use an interpreter to do it properly.
Do you have therapists who speak our language?
Our team's language skills vary. Where we can't match a language, we arrange an interpreter at no cost to you.
