"Should I wait and see?"

Notting Hill has a high proportion of younger households, and a good share of the families we see from the area are here with a first child, an early concern, and advice from somebody that they should wait and see.

Sometimes waiting is the right call. Often it isn't, and here is the honest position: the cost of an early conversation is very low, and the cost of a missed year is not.

Signs worth acting on rather than waiting on:

  • No babbling or gesturing by around 12 months
  • No single words by around 18 months
  • No two-word combinations by around two years
  • Losing words or skills your child previously had — this one always warrants a prompt review
  • Not responding to their name, or inconsistent responses to sound
  • Extreme distress with textures, sounds, clothing or food
  • Feeding difficulties, or a very restricted range of foods
  • Not being understood by people outside the family by around three
  • Your own instinct that something is different, even without a specific reason

You don't need a diagnosis, a referral or an NDIS plan to talk to us. If we don't think your child needs therapy, we'll tell you that, and you'll have lost nothing but a phone call.

Early intervention at Kids Connect

With very young children, therapy looks mostly like play and mostly like coaching you. Our clinicians are trained in the DIR®/Floortime™ Model and the Hanen programs — It Takes Two to Talk , More Than Words , Learning Language and Loving It — which are built around parents rather than around a therapy room.

The aim is that the useful work happens in the two hundred hours a week you spend with your child, not the one hour a week they spend with us.

Children under 6 with developmental delay can access support through the NDIS early childhood approach without a diagnosis. You can contact an early childhood partner directly — for Monash families that's Link Health and Community, on 1800 546 532.

From 1 October 2026, the new Thriving Kids program also begins rolling out in Victoria for children 8 and under.

Questions from Notting Hill families

My child is only two. Is that too young?
No. Two is a very common age to start, and much of what we do at that age is coaching you rather than working directly with your child.

Our maternal and child health nurse said to wait six months. Should we?
MCH nurses are excellent, and sometimes waiting is right. But a second opinion costs you one appointment. If you're worried enough to be reading this page, have the conversation.

Do you offer late appointments for working parents?
We're open until 5:00pm Monday to Saturday. Saturday slots are limited — join the waitlist and tell us what you need.
