Getting ready for school — properly

Starting school is the biggest transition most children have faced, and the things that make it go well are not the things most people prepare for. Being able to write your name matters far less than being able to ask for help, cope with a change of plan, sit through a mat session, and manage a playground with two hundred other children in it.

Our Skills for School readiness program works on what actually predicts a good start:

  • Following instructions — especially instructions given to a group, which is a different skill from being told something directly
  • Asking for help, and telling an adult when something is wrong
  • Transitions — stopping one thing and starting another without falling apart
  • Sitting and attending for the length of time a classroom expects
  • Independence — lunchboxes, drink bottles, shoes, toileting, jumpers
  • Playground survival — joining a game, handling exclusion, managing noise and unpredictability
  • Regulation — noticing when things are getting too much, and having something to do about it

Groups, for children who find groups hard

Our Play and Social Language Group Program runs small groups facilitated by a speech pathologist and an occupational therapist together. That combination matters: social difficulty is very often a regulation problem wearing a social costume, and having both disciplines in the room means it gets addressed properly.

Groups are also where skills get tested in a realistic environment. A child can perform a social skill perfectly in a one-to-one session and be unable to use it in a room with three other kids in it. That gap is the whole point.

Individual therapy

Alongside groups, we offer one-to-one speech pathology and occupational therapy for language, speech sounds, literacy, sensory processing, regulation, motor skills and daily living.

It isn't just Prep

Transitions keep coming — the move into Year 3 and more independent work, the jump to Year 7, changing schools. Children who managed one transition well can struggle badly with the next, and it doesn't mean anything has gone backwards. We work with children across the primary years and into secondary.

When should we start school readiness work?
The year before Prep is ideal — starting around the middle of that year gives enough runway without it dragging.

My child is starting school in a few weeks and I'm worried. Is it too late?
No. Even a short block of targeted work on transitions and asking for help can change how the first term goes. Call us.
